During Australia’s mad summer of ravaging bushfires, more than 11 million hectares were burnt out. That is, more than 110,000 square kilometres, or 30% of the total land size of the Philippine archipelago. It is nigh impossible to imagine the destruction in terms of lives lost, houses and property destroyed and the catastrophic impact upon the environment. It is estimated more than a billion animals perished, but how do you count them? Aside from animals lost, an incalculable number of insects perished. Including BEES.
Bees are not just pretty little things that buzz around. And sting. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. There are figures that show bees play a key role in one out of every three bites of food we eat. PLUS, bees are a wonderful source of beautiful HONEY.
This is my tribute to the humble, hard-buzzing and hardworking bee.
